Parks and Recreation press release:
Cooking Classes for Adults
Deadlines ApproachingWould you like to learn a new cooking skill in 2010? The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department is offering the following classes for adults:
Canning for Beginners, Monday Jan. 11, 6 – 9 pm.
For more than a century, home canning has been a popular way to preserve and enjoy homegrown fruits and vegetables, not to mention fresh-caught seafood and other delicacies. It is safe and economical and requires very little equipment. Join instructor Ann Holsinger as she demonstrates the three most common food preservation methods used today: pressure canning, hot bath canning and freezing. Registration deadline: Jan. 10. Fee: $23. Location: Community Center, 233 W. Main St.30 Days of Delicious Cooking, Tuesday Jan. 12, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.
Take the stress out of meal preparation by assembling 30 days of delicious, fresh-tasting and nutritious entrees, side dishes and snacks to freeze now and eat later. You’ll save time and money. Instructor Ambia Cooper will show you in just two hours how to accomplish this task. The class fee includes the book “The Freezer Cooking Manual: A Month of Meals Made Easy,” authored by Indiana residents Nanci Slagle and Tara Wohlenhaus. Registration deadline: Jan. 11. Fee: $29. Location: Community Center, 233 W. Main St.Artisan Bread Making, Wednesdays Jan. 13 – Jan 27, 6 – 9 pm.
Homemade bread is substantially tastier than store-purchased bread, isn’t laden with preservatives, is very inexpensive to make, and doesn’t take all that much time, either. You will be given a kit of ingredients at each class session. You will mix, knead and ferment the dough, then leave each class with the recipe, the knowledge and the dough to bake when you get home. For best results at home, you should have a rectangular pizza stone, parchment paper and a cast iron skillet. Samples of each bread will be available. As you work and wait, you will learn about variations, ingredients, dough, the fermentation process and more. The breads featured are Fougasse, Sourdough Bread Bowls, and Soft Pretzels. Please bring to class a large mixing bowl, wooden or rubber spatula, clean towel, apron (this is messy) and a liquid measuring cup. Registration deadline: Jan.12. Fee: $69.
