Fort Wayne Community Schools press release:

FWCS celebrates Red Ribbon Week

Several Fort Wayne Community Schools will recognize Red Ribbon Week with fun activities to encourage students to stay away from drugs.

The Red Ribbon Campaign was started by the National Family Partnership after drug traffickers in Mexico City killed DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. Using Red Ribbons is designed to present a unified and visible commitment towards creating a drug-free America. Congress and the President declared the last week in October (Oct. 23-31) as Red Ribbon Week, but this year, many schools are celebrating it Oct. 19-23.

Schools across the country, including those in FWCS, use Red Ribbon Week to reinforce the drug-free messages students are taught throughout the year.

Schools participating Oct. 19-23

  • Indian Village, 3835 Wenonah Lane, will invite Berne Police Officer Earl Hough to speak to students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and their effects on the body. He will visit the school from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

On Wednesday, students will receive bracelets with the theme and will write about activities they could do instead of drugs. The card they write on will be entered into a drawing for a backpack with the theme message on Friday. On Thursday, students will receive stickers with the theme message.
