Souder Announces $220,000 Federal Grant for Metz Volunteer Fire Department
(January 28, 2010) U.S. Rep. Mark Souder announced today that the Metz Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a $220,020 grant through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
The Metz Fire Department plans to use the funds for a new fire engine to replace the nearly 30 year old engine currently in use.
“I’m pleased to announce that the Metz Fire Department has been awarded $220,000 to help upgrade its emergency vehicle capabilities,” said Souder, a member of the Homeland Security Committee. “Residents of Steuben County will benefit from this funding, which will improve the fire department’s ability to provide the very best fire protection available.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is designed as an opportunity for Congress to work with the Homeland Security Department to strengthen the overall preparedness of first-responder organizations in the United States.
Fire departments could apply for eligible activities in one of two different categories:
- Operations and Safety Program Area: Eligible activities for fire departments and nonaffiliated EMS organizations were limited to training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities.
- Vehicle Acquisition Program Area: Eligible apparatus available to fire departments under this program area included, but was not limited to, pumpers, brush trucks, tankers/tenders, rescue vehicles, ambulances, quints, aerials, foam units, and fireboats.
