The first community Shred Day in northeast Indiana will draw attention to the dangers of identity theft, and provide a convenient and quick way for the public to destroy unneeded personal information. This event will raise funds to help support the new Law Enforcement/Fire Fighters Memorial of Allen County.
The public can bring old documents to the Community Shred Day location on July 26. Documents will be shredded and recycled courtesy of Shred-it. Papers may be brought in plastic bags or boxes.
Newspapers and cardboard cannot be processed in the shredder. If items are brought in boxes, please make plans to carry out empty boxes as there will not be facilities to dispose of cardboard on site. The shredding services are offered free of charge courtesy of Shred-it, however, donations will be encouraged and accepted to benefit the above mentioned charity. This year’s goal is to raise $5,000 to honor the men and women who devote their lives to public safety. A Shred Day event in Indianapolis this spring raised $16,000 for that area’s Crime Stoppers and processed 42 tons of paper in one day.
The Law Enforcement/Fire Fighters Memorial of Allen County was started as a memorial garden in 2000 by Jerry and Linda Vandeveer. This May, the sixth annual Police Officer Memorial Ceremony was held at the new permanent site at 1000 North Wells. The Memorial is a non-profit organization whose board of directors is responsible to oversee the development, construction and future maintenance of the site. Ceremonies are held each May and September to honor the memory of public safety officers and firefighters, and the memorial is open to the public.
