Boys and Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne awarded AEP grant for FIRST LEGO League program
(March 24, 2016) – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne have been awarded a $500 grant from Indiana Michigan Power, on behalf of American Electric Power (AEP), for their FIRST LEGO League program. This is the second year that AEP/Indiana Michigan Power has awarded this grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne as part of the company’s initiative to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education and training within its service territory.
Girls and boys, ages 9-14, participate in FIRST LEGO League programs at the Fairfield Boys & Girls Club and the Fellowship Boys & Girls Club. The program provides hands-on learning in STEM subjects for the young members that design, build, program and race a LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot. During FIRST LEGO League competitions, the children present their project as a business endeavor.
Club teams have been strong contenders in competitions, and have taken home three first place trophies in: Robot Games (Indiana Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs competition, 2015); Core Values (Indiana Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs competition, 2015); Robot Design (Science Central competition, 2014).
Fort Wayne Metals has been a key partner in the program, and provides volunteer staff to coach the team and lead program activities.
The LEGO Robotics program is just one of the Club programs focusing on academic success, encouraging members to embrace STEM subjects, apply creative problem solving and work together as a team towards fun, hands-on goals.
