News release from Science Central:
Sister Cities sign unveiled at Science Central
(February 4, 2016) – Mayor Tom Henry unveiled a new sign listing Fort Wayne’s sister cities at Science Central on February 4th. The sign, which is located in front of the building, shows the directions and distances to Fort Wayne’s four sister Cities in Takaoka, Japan; Plock, Poland; Gera, Germany; and Taizhou, China and is the first of its kind in Fort Wayne.
“We’re excited to have this sign at our facility,” states Martin S. Fisher, Executive Director of Science Central. “We’re all about learning in a fun environment, and the sign will teach our visitors about our place in the world relative to our sister cities. We also hope that our guests will use it as a reason to investigate other aspects of our sister cities, for example their geography, economy, and culture.”
Fort Wayne Sister Cities International Inc, a local all-volunteer not-for-profit has developed the idea for the sign, funded it and coordinated the installation with the Fort Wayne Street Department. “We want to make sure everyone in Fort Wayne knows all of our Sister Cities,” explains board member Helge Hinniger. “Most people know about Takaoka and maybe Gera, but only few are aware of our sister cities in Poland and China. We hope that this sign will raise awareness of the great relationships we have with cities all over the world and will learn about other cultures. We can only send so many high school students on exchanges, but this sign will help us reach thousands of people every year.” Fort Wayne Sister Cities International plans to install additional signs in the near future.
