What’s Happening in the Parks August 1 – 8
Summer Playground Carnival: Bring the family out for a FREE, fun-filled evening with clowns, animals and games. The Hannah Homestead Carnival is Wednesday, August 5, 5-7 pm. Try your hand at the fish pond, ring toss, duck pond and candy wheel, or have your face painted.
Foellinger Theatre: Come to the outdoor theatre this week for a wide variety of musical entertainment, sponsored in part by Arts United and the Indiana Arts Commission:
Saturday, August 1 at 8 pm – Shade ‘N Shannon. A full band sound production featuring Mr. Jonze on guitar/vocals and Shannon Persinger on tambourine/vocals with back tracks. Enjoy well-known songs like Ring of Fire and Folsom Prison Blues intertwined with early tunes like Home of the Blues and fun songs like A Boy Named Sue. Fee: FREE.
Thursday, August 6 at 8 pm – The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra. This tribute to Frank Sinatra and Count Basie promises to be a very enjoyable evening. Fee: $5. Sponsored by: PBS39.
Friday, August 7 at 7:30 pm – The Fort Wayne Children’s Choir. This performance is the culmination of Choralfest, a weeklong multi-disciplinary arts day camp. Choralfest offers children the opportunity to explore a mixture of artistic forms, including singing, dancing and drama. Fee: FREE.
Saturday, August 8 at 8 pm – Molly Hatchet. In the early 1970’s, a new form of music was emerging in the South. A mixture of blues, country gospel and the English invasion of rock and roll that later was to be coined with the phrase Southern Rock. One of these bands was Molly Hatchet, named after a famous 17th century axe murderess “hatchet molly.” Opening band is Brother. Fee: $15/$18 Day of Show. Sponsored by: Rock 104. Botanical Conservatory: The Botanical Roots Outdoor Concert Series continues on Friday, August 7 with Lion Zion Reggae. This is the “baddest” band to hit Kalamazoo. Lion Zion is a combination of several bands from the Kalamazoo area that crossed paths along the way and decided to form what we believe to be the right mix of reggae, zouk, soukous, and afro-latin influences. Admission: $6/ages 13 and up, free for ages 12 and under. Conservatory members admitted FREE. Doors open at 7:30 pm with the opening act at 8:30 pm. Salomon Farm Learning Center: Show us your green thumb! Enter your cut flowers, vegetables, herbs, houseplants and flower arrangements in the 35th Annual Flower and Vegetable Show on Saturday, August 8, 8 am – 3pm. Entries will be accepted from 8 – 11 am. Anyone can enter! Judging will begin at noon and the show opens for public viewing at 1 pm. There is no charge for entering or visiting the show.
