Amazing Maize, Engage with an IPFW Scientist, and Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown highlight upcoming Science Central September activities
(August 17, 2015) – With school back in session, programs and activities at Science Central will be picking up pace this fall. The following activities are slated throughout the month of September.
August 31 – September 11, “Annual Fall Shutdown”
During the weekdays of this two week period, Science Central will remain closed in order to perform exhibit maintenance and repairs. The center will, however, be open on the weekend of September 5 – 6.Tuesday, September 8, “Half-Pint and Afternoon Science”
Starting in September, Science Central will begin the 2015-2016 season for its Half-Pint and Afternoon Science classes. These programs are designed to provide preschoolers and home-schoolers with immersive science education opportunities.Wednesday, September 9, “FIRST® LEGO® League Coaches Clinic”
IPFW will host a FIRST® LEGO® League Coaches clinic on-site at Science Central from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.Now – Sunday, September 13, “The Evolving Universe” touring exhibition on display
Take a journey through time and space with Science Central’s latest touring exhibition, “The Evolving Universe.” This collection of full color, high-resolution photographs and interpretative captions tells the story of how galaxies are born, mature, and eventually die. “The Evolving Universe” will be on display at Science Central May 23 through September 13, 2015.The Evolving Universe is organized by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). The original exhibition was made possible by The Windland Smith Rice Nature’s Best Photography Fund.
Science Central’s presentation of The Evolving Universe is sponsored by Indiana Space Grant Consortium and Frontier Communications.
Sunday, September 13, “Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown”
Science Central will participate along with 11 other Fort Wayne cultural attractions in Visit Fort Wayne’s Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown. This event gives local visitors the opportunity to visit any of the participating attractions for free from noon until 5 p.m. when they present their event “passport.” Visitors interested in participating in the event can print off a passport at visitfortwayne.com or pick one up at participating Fort Wayne Kroger stores or Old National Bank branches.Saturday, September 19 – Saturday, January 3, 2016 “Amazing Maize” touring exhibition
Amazing Maize explores the science of how maize has evolved over thousands of years to become one of our most significant crops, and why it continues to surprise us today. What is maize? Why is it important? How has it changed? Visitors will learn the answers to these questions, and also explore some of the newest discoveries in modern science. Come and learn about the genetic research that helps scientists to better explain the evolution of this crop and how that knowledge can improve everyday life, at both a local and global level. A walk-through maze will allow visitors to understand interesting information about popcorn, such as the history of popcorn, and why popcorn pops. The exhibition was developed by Purdue University Agriculture Exhibit Design Center, and the Museum of the Earth at the Paleontological Research Institution.Saturday, September 19, “Flying WILD Workshop”
Science Central will host a Flying WILD Workshop for formal and informal educators interested in receiving the conservation training for Middle Schoolers.Saturday, September 26, “Portal to the Public”
Science Central will host the first of its Fall 2015 series of Portal to the Public workshops. Working scientists and engineers interested in professional development opportunities to improve their communication skills with the public are encouraged to apply.Saturday, September 26, “Last Saturday”
Science Central will offer half-price admission to visitors as part of the Downtown Improvement District’s Last Saturday event on September 26 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Science Central’s normal admission cost is $8 per person; free for ages 2 and under. On “Last Saturday,” admission will be just $4 per person; $3.50 for ages 66+.Saturday, September 26, “Engage with an IPFW Scientist” featuring Dr. Art Friedel
On September 26, meet Dr. Art Friedel, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry as he presents “How to Make Pennies Float, and other Interesting Phenomena!” Designed to provide IPFW professors with the opportunity to present their specialty topics in a fun and casual way, Engage with an IPFW Scientist nurtures an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among the young and old alike.To learn more about these programs, current exhibits and other activities at the science center, visit www.sciencecentral.org.
