City receives award for Rivergreenway extension project

(February 25, 2014) – The City of Fort Wayne has received the “Outstanding Trail Project Award” from the Greenways Foundation of Indiana for the fourth and fifth phases of the Rivergreenway extension from Johnny Appleseed Park to Shoaff Park.

Mayor Tom Henry accepted the award on behalf of the City at a luncheon today in Indianapolis.

In 2013, work continued on the extension of the Rivergreenway from Johnny Appleseed Park to Shoaff Park. The project will connect 10 neighborhoods, including several large apartment complexes and a retirement community; IPFW; Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast; one elementary school; one middle school; two high schools; as well as four shopping areas. Allen County and Fort Wayne Trails are project partners.

Fort Wayne is a leader in trail development with a trail network of nearly 75 miles, a commitment to funding future growth of the trail system, the Bike Fort Wayne plan, and the initiation of the free, guided community bike rides, Trek the Trails.

The Greenways Foundation is a statewide, charitable trust providing leadership and advocacy in the growth and use of Indiana greenways and trails.
