FWMoA Announces new contemporary art series
‘Crossing Lines: Contemporary Art from Coast to Coast’ presents trends in contemporary art in American cities, starting with Austin, Texas
(November 18, 2014) – The Fort Wayne Museum of Art unveiled its most recent curator collaboration on November 8 with the first exhibition in the series Crossing Lines: Contemporary Art from Coast to Coast, curated by Fort Wayne artist Josef Zimmerman. The first city profiled by Zimmerman is Austin, TX.
Although similarities between artists and their work may be drawn, the goal of this exhibition series is not to attempt to unify what is happening in studios across America or even within a city. The goal of this series is rather simple: to bring more contemporary art to Fort Wayne to give the people of Northeast Indiana a snapshot of the trends in contemporary art in all parts of the country. Viewers may come to many conclusions about the state of visual art in cities alike or different than Fort Wayne, and it is the Museum’s goal to give its visitors a chance to come to those conclusions on their own.
Twelve artists were chosen for this exhibit for a variety of reasons, but curator Josef Zimmerman says he was drawn to their unique use of each of their chosen mediums. “The city of Austin, Texas, seemed like a hotbed for fresh creativity but not so entrenched in the art market like cities such as New York or Los Angeles. And yet, Austin is not so obscure that the public wouldn’t be fascinated by what’s happening there,” Zimmerman says. Zimmerman and FWMoA President & CEO Charles Shepard have plans to explore the art scenes of Savannah, GA; Oakland, CA; and Rochester, NY for many of the same reasons.
‘Crossing Lines’ will be on display at FWMoA until January 15, 2015.
