News release from the TinCaps:
TinCaps Look Good in Loss on Vera Bradley Day
(July 27, 2014) – The TinCaps were dressed in a floral pattern on Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field, but did not flourish. After collecting 14 hits in an 8-4 win over Wisconsin on Saturday night, Fort Wayne was only able to muster two runs on six hits less than 24 hours later, and the result was a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Timber Rattlers on Vera Bradley Day.
Wisconsin (19-16, 55-49) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against TinCaps starting pitcher Ronald Herrera (5-6), when a two-out single by Taylor Brennan scored Chris McFarland — who also singled — from second base.
Wildness by Timber Rattlers starter Chad Thompson allowed Fort Wayne to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning. Thompson (1-0), who was making his first start for Wisconsin since the 2012 season after an injury sidelined him in 2013, walked Ronnie Richardson to begin the inning. After making several throws over to first base in an effort to pick Richardson off, Thompson threw wildly past the first baseman Brennan. The throwing error allowed Richardson to reach second base. Richardson would advance to third base on an infield ground out, and would later score on a wild pitch, allowing the TinCaps to tie the game, 1-1.
The tie would not last long, however. With one out in the fourth, Brennan walked, advanced to third base on a double by Omar Garcia, and scored on an infield groundout to give the Timber Rattlers a 2-1 advantage. The visitors would proceed to score single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, respectively, to increase their lead to 5-1.
Fort Wayne (14-21, 44-60) would close the gap to 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ryan Miller received a base on balls from Wisconsin relief pitcher Taylor Williams, and advanced to second base when Trea Turner grounded out.
After Nick Schulz struck out for the second out of the inning, Josh VanMeter singled to left field. Miller initially stopped at third base, but then came in to score when the ball got past Jose Pena for an error. That would be as close as Fort Wayne would come, however, as Williams shut out the TinCaps over the final two innings.
The TinCaps’ jerseys featured a new Vera Bradley pattern for Fall 2014 called Ziggy Zinnia. The colorful pattern covered “TinCaps” across the front of their jerseys, as well as their numbers on the front and back, and sleeves.
The rubber game of the three game series with the Timber Rattlers, and the final game of the six-game home stand is scheduled for Monday night. The TinCaps will send right hander Yimmi Brasoban to the mound against Preston Gainey. The 7:05 p.m. game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app and can be seen on Xfinity Channel 81.
