USF, Jewish Federation presenting Holocaust lecture

(February 17, 2014) – The University of Saint Francis Department of Philosphy and Theology and School of Arts and Sciences will host “Irene Gut Opdyke: Righteous Among the Nations,” a free public lecture about the Holocaust, on Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in the university’s Brookside Ballroom. The Jewish Federation of Fort Wayne is the event sponsor.

The community is invited to join Jeannie Opdyke Smith as she tells the story of her mother, Irene Gut Opdyke. A Polish Catholic during World War II, Irene rescued Jews during the Holocaust. Decades later, she was named by the Israeli Holocaust Commission as one of the Righteous Among the Nations.

Brookside is located next to Mirror Lake on the university’s main campus at 2701 Spring St.
