News release from Kroger:

Kroger 35th Annual Fight Cancer Day – Thursday, 10/3/2013

(September 30, 2013) – The Kroger Co.’s Central Division has announced plans for the 35th annual “Fight Cancer Day.” on Thursday October 3, 2013.

The “Fight Cancer Day” promotion this year includes Kroger associates who are featured with boxing gloves on billboards and in-store posters throughout the Fort Wayne area.

The event has been “re-branded,” thanks to the creativity of local, award-winning ad agency Ferguson Advertising. This year, customers and associates will be offered the opportunity to sign or write messages to loved ones on large Fight Cancer Day banners hung in all 15 stores. The name change is intended to symbolize Kroger’s desire to fight harder against a disease that impacts far too many associates and customers.

Kroger is donating 3% of sales on October 3rd to ACS and CSNI. This year 15 Kroger and Scott’s banner stores in the region will participate. “Kroger Cancer Day 2012” total proceeds were $56,262 and the company hopes to significantly exceed that amount in 2013. Over 34 years, the annual Cancer Day event has raised $4,593,213 for local cancer organizations.

Kroger customers will be given the opportunity to contribute to the two cancer organizations by donating cash in increments of $1, $3 or $5 between Thursday, September 26th and Sunday, October 6th. There is no limit to the total amount a customer can contribute. In appreciation, Kroger is offering a special Fight Cancer Day ad with savings opportunities available only in the 15 northeast Indiana stores.

Volunteers from ACS and CSNI, many of whom are cancer survivors will be working in stores across the region in support of the event.

Kroger Quote:
According to Kroger President Jeff Burt, “We are determined to be a compassionate and supportive corporate citizen in every local community we serve. Kroger customers and associates always have been especially generous in supporting Fight Cancer Day and we are hopeful that will be the case this year. Cancer has a devastating effect on so many members of the Kroger family. Cancer does not take a year off and we must redouble our efforts. Each year, we celebrate our survivors and we mourn those we have lost. To prevail, we must work as a team and Kroger is deeply honored to work with Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana, the American Cancer Society and volunteers from so many community organizations to raise critical funds for the fight against cancer.”

American Cancer Society Quote:
“We are grateful for Kroger’s corporate leadership in the fight against breast cancer,” said Nick Johnson, Executive Director of the American Cancer Society of Northeast Indiana. “For a third of a century funds raised through Cancer Day bolster the American Cancer Society’s efforts to provide free support programs to local breast cancer patients and allocate additional funding for cutting-edge breast cancer research. With the community’s involvement in Fight Cancer Day, we’re all working together to create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays,” Johnson continued.

Cancer Services Quote:
Amber Recker of Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana stated, “Last year more than 3,000 local people with cancer and their families received emotional support and practical resources from Cancer Services because of corporate leaders like Kroger. We are honored to have a long-standing relationship with Kroger that continues to grow and find new ways to make sure that friends and neighbors in our community know that there is an organization ready to help when a family is touched by cancer.”
