Schools Celebrate Constitution Day
(September 16, 2013) – Schools throughout the District will learn about the Constitution of the United States with focused lessons and guest speakers who will share their knowledge of the Constitution.
Constitution Day was established by Congress in 2004 to acknowledge the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. Schools are required to teach about the Constitution each Sept. 17.
In Indiana, judges visit schools throughout the state to talk about the Constitution, how it is amended and how it connects to their position in a courtroom.
Northwood Middle School welcomes District 3 Judge Stanley Levine, who will speak to eighth-graders from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and provide them with a pocket Constitution.
At Blackhawk Middle School, Andy Downs, director of the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, will work with seventh-grade students, teaching them about the evolution of voter’s rights and campaigning. Downs will be at the school from 8:40 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Other schools will participate through special events and lessons.
