State to recognize 26 Indiana counties for efforts to increase college success
(May 7, 2013) INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers will recognize county leaders from 26 College Success Coalitions during a special awards ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse on Wednesday, May 8. The county coalitions are part of a growing statewide network of local organizations working to increase the percentage of Hoosiers with education and training beyond high school.
Since 2010, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education has supported the development of College Success Coalitions in 50 counties through its Learn More Indiana outreach initiative. Collectively, these county coalitions have recruited nearly 1,400 member organizations and implemented almost 2,000 targeted activities designed to increase college access and completion.
The 26 counties to be honored this week comprise the first two cohorts of College Success Coalitions. Up to 20 Indiana counties will be accepted into the College Success Coalition each year on a competitive basis until all 92 counties across the state have an active, sustainable local coalition. WHY: Only a third of Hoosiers have completed education beyond high school, currently ranking Indiana 40th in the nation. Indiana has set a goal of increasing the percentage of Hoosiers with a quality college degree or workforce credential to 60 percent by 2025. The College Success Coalitions are part of an ongoing effort to engage more Hoosiers in increasing education attainment.

Please note that Allen County College Success Coalition members will be recognized tomorrow in Indianapolis for our ongoing efforts to improve college readiness outcomes for Allen County students. Coalition members include non profit agencies, schools, the business community and higher education.
One of the goals of the coalition is to fully understand your community’s college readiness data and develop strategies to address those problems. I am attaching some of the data used by our local coalition. The coalition’s work is ongoing and critical to the educational and economic success of Allen County.
On a related note, the Urban League will recognize 55 minority scholars at a banquet tonight at Turner Chapel AME at 6:30 PM through our National Achievers initiative. National Achievers is a long-standing partnership between Urban Leagues and African American churches to recognize minority students for maintaining GPAs of 2.7 or above. This is open to all minority students in grades 6-12. Not only does it recognize their accomplishments, but also makes students eligible for local and national Urban League scholarships. Last year, local students received more than $12,000 in scholarships from the local and National Urban League.
