Ensure a Sink-Free Ship at Free Cardboard Boat Building Workshop
(May 8, 2013) – Learn tips to ensure a sink-free ship by attending the “How to Build a Cardboard Boat” workshop, Monday, May 13, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Steel Dynamics Keith E. Busse IPFW Alumni Center.
The workshop is in preparation for the IPFW Cardboard Regatta presented by Kelly Box & Packaging and Rock104 at IPFW’s RiverFest 2013, Saturday, June 22.
Workshop presenters are Jessica Butler, interim director of IPFW Alumni Relations; Nick Mehta, Ph.D., lecturer in the Department of Engineering; and Steven Horney, mechanical design engineer and marathon kayak racer.
The challenge is to design, build, and race a human-powered, 100-percent corrugated cardboard boat on a course on the St. Joseph River. Boat registration fees begin at $25 and range from 1- to 10-passenger crafts, with the first 15 boats in each category receiving free cardboard from Kelly Box & Packaging. A “Build On-Site” category will also be offered the day of the event, allowing racers two hours to build a 1- to 2-person cardboard boat using only the items
supplied. Numerous prizes will be awarded, including $1,000 in cash prizes!Additional sponsors of the IPFW Cardboard Regatta are Diskey Architectural Signage, IPFW RiverFest, PHP, and the northeast chapter of the Indiana University Alumni Association.
The workshop is free and open to the public. Door prizes, including free cardboard and other boat-building supplies, will be awarded.
The IPFW Alumni Center is located on IPFW’s west campus at 1528 E. California Road, across from the Holiday Inn at IPFW and the Coliseum.
