Sen. Banks’ Bill to Create Common Credit Transfer Policies for State Universities Passes Unanimously Out of House Committee
(February 13, 2012) – State Sen. Jim Banks’ education bill seeking to streamline academic credit transfer policies between state universities passed the House Committee on Education today with a vote of 10-0.
Banks (R- Columbia City) said Senate Bill 182 would increase the amount of credits that can be transferred among all state educational institutions. This initiative would save family and taxpayer dollars from additional tuition costs that result when students must retake classes.
“The goal of this legislation is to allow increased transparency in higher education, better ensuring students know whether their courses are transferable,” Banks said. “Any initiative that lets students more clearly understand their academic track record and finish their degrees in a timely manner is a sound policy initiative.”
The Commission for Higher Education would create a common course numbering system for general education courses at all public Indiana institutions by May 15, 2013.
SB 182 now moves to the full House for further consideration.
