News release from Congressman Marlin Stutzman (IN-3rd):

Stutzman Chairs Oversight Hearing on Veterans’ Employment and Training

(Washington, D.C. – March 3, 2011) – This morning the House Veteran’s Affairs Committee, Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity chaired by Congressman Marlin Stutzman (IN-03) held an oversight hearing on the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS) Fiscal Year 2012 Budget. The Honorable Raymond M. Jefferson, Assistant Secretary for Veterans’ Employment and Training with the Department of Labor, Ms. Bonnie Elsey of the National Association of State Workforce Agencies along with representatives of many Veterans’ Service Organizations testified to their views the most effective use of the proposed FY 2012 Budget. The VETS program offers employment and training to eligible veterans and transitioning service members to assist and prepare them to find meaningful careers.

“It is no secret that veterans are facing difficult times finding and retaining good-paying jobs in Northeast Indiana and throughout the Nation.” Stutzman stated “We must redouble our efforts to make the best use of the funds available. Especially when 63% of unemployed veterans are between the ages of 35 and 64 and these veterans have little or no access to veterans’ education, training, or retraining programs. We must provide the best opportunities possible for veterans and look to find positions that fit the training they have already received or retrain them for civilian occupations.”
