Mayor Henry makes it official, seeks new term
Strong Leadership in Tough Times is Centerpiece of Re-election Message

Renewing his pledge of service to the people of Fort Wayne, Mayor Tom Henry today launched his re-election campaign for the city’s highest office. Mayor Henry was joined at the announcement by an enthusiastic crowd of supporters, friends and family members. The festivities were held at Bergstaff Place, 2020 East Washington Boulevard.

“With each day that I am privileged to serve as your Mayor, my commitment to Fort Wayne becomes stronger and stronger,” said Mayor Henry. “When I look at our city, even in these tough economic times, I see exceptional people, countless possibilities and a Fort Wayne that is unafraid to reach for the stars. I see opportunity. And it makes me more determined than ever to work hand in hand with all of you to realize our dreams. Together, we can tackle our challenges, no matter how hard, and keep our momentum growing. That’s why I want to continue to be your Mayor.”

During his time in office, Mayor Henry has been singularly focused on making Fort Wayne a more attractive city for both residents and businesses. To set the table for success, he has kept the City fiscally healthy while continually improving its infrastructure, enhancing downtown and nurturing its neighborhoods.

“The worst economic downturn since the Great Depression and the pain it has caused in the lives of so many residents have steeled my resolve to build a more competitive city,” observed Henry. “It’s why strengthening our financial foundation and delivering high-quality services to every resident have been my priorities. It’s why I am doing everything in my power to make Fort Wayne a place where good jobs can grow, businesses can prosper and families can thrive. It’s why I fought so hard to secure a positive outcome to the City Light Lease issue, leaving a lasting legacy for this community.”

Just three years into his first term, Mayor Henry has already defined a clear record of leadership and a long list of accomplishments, including:

• A balanced City budget, three years running, in the midst of a deep national recession;
• Fully funded City programs while other communities are slashing and cutting;
• High-quality, cost-effective City services delivered to residents every day;
• Sufficient City cash reserves to protect against emergencies;
• New City trash and recycling contracts that lower costs and user fees, improve services and reward recycling;
• A trail system that has tripled in size over the last six years;
• A pivotal role in attaining the goal of full City-County partnership through co-location, bringing nearly all local government together to better serve residents and send a welcoming message to businesses;
• The successful merger of Fort Wayne and Allen County 911 communications services;
• Significant progress on the Long Term Control Plan to clean our three rivers, removing one billion gallons of sewer overflow annually;
• A winning Commercial Façade program that beautifies neighborhood Main Streets, leverage resources and bolsters small businesses;
• Revitalized homes and jobs created through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program;
• The SmartGov initiative, using new methods and technologies to make government more open, effective and responsive;
• The Courtyard by Marriott hotel, a key component of Harrison Square, requiring vision to bring together a team of local and regional banks to make it happen;
• The near realization of The Harrison, the residential and retail element of Harrison Square, and the final piece of this catalytic downtown development; and
• The resolution of the longstanding City Light Lease matter, resulting in a $39.2 million settlement and a lasting legacy for the community.

Mayor Henry’s diverse life and professional experiences make him uniquely suited to guiding Fort Wayne. A son of the city, he has a dedicated record of public service. From 1984 through 2004, he represented the 3rd District on the Fort Wayne City Council. A successful business owner and corporate executive before becoming Mayor, he understands the demands facing companies today. As the proprietor of the Green Frog Inn -a landmark neighborhood restaurant and pub – his wife, Cindy, also provides frontline insights.

Henry holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of St. Francis and served his country in the U.S. Army.
Mayor Henry is a vocal advocate for those most in need and continues to volunteer his time with several community organizations. He and Cindy are proud parents of two children and delight in their two grandchildren.

“The work we do today to make Fort Wayne a place of pride and opportunity for all, a community where new ideas and talent can flourish, is an investment in ourselves and in the future,” noted Mayor Henry. “I believe in Fort Wayne.
