“Bald Eagles in Fort Wayne” Starts Science Central Lunch with an IPFW Scientist Series
(September 24, 2010) – Learn about bald eagles and the hope for their return to northern Indiana at the first Science Central Lunch with an IPFW Scientist session of the year. Winfried Peters, assistant professor of biology at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), will discuss “Bald Eagles in Fort Wayne” Saturday, Oct. 9, at Science Central, 1950 N. Clinton, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The program is open to the public at a cost of $16 per person; $10 for Science Central members. Lunch is included.
In spring 2010, two bald eagles spent a few weeks in Fort Wayne, raising hopes that the national bird will breed in the area again soon. Peters will discuss why and when they became extinct in the state of Indiana, their reintroduction in southern Indiana, and their subsequent spread to the north. Participants will experience for themselves what happens if a bald eagle sits on an egg with a shell that’s too thin (something that has happened as a consequence of DDT poisoning), reconstruct routes on which the bald eagle spread through northern Indiana using maps of the state as it looks to eagles, and other hands-on activities.
The Science Central Lunch with an IPFW Scientist Series is designed for families with young people 8 and up and plants in both the young and most seasoned participant a budding interest in science. After each presentation, which includes a hands-on activity, participants enjoy lunch with the presenter. Advance reservations are required, and families with young people ages 8-14 are welcome.
