Press release from Parkview Hospital:
Parkview begins mobile intensive care unit program
(August 19, 2010) – Parkview Hospital officials today introduced a new service – the Samaritan Mobile Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The Mobile ICU provides medical care and transportation to critically ill and injured patients from northern Indiana, northwest Ohio and southern Michigan.
As an expansion of the Samaritan Flight Program, the Mobile ICU complements the services provided by the Parkview Samaritan helicopters. In situations when a Samaritan helicopter is not available, such as inclement weather or dispatch elsewhere, the Mobile ICU is a valuable alternative.
“The Mobile Intensive Care Unit will be welcome by many individuals and medical providers throughout our region as an alternative means of medical care and transport when the Samaritan helicopter crew is not available. We are pleased to add ground transportation to the Samaritan fleet,” said Cathy Harris, director of flight and EMS, Parkview Hospital. “The new Mobile ICU gives our team flexibility in how we reach patients in need of medical care.”
To expand the Samaritan program, 14 crew members have joined the Samaritan team. Additional crew members will be added.Parkview began providing medical flight services in November 1989 with the introduction of the first Samaritan helicopter. A second helicopter, based in Rochester, Ind., was added in 1999. The Samaritan crew has provided life-saving medical care and transportation to more than 17,000 people.
