Allen County Board of Commissioners news release:
Bidding Open for Former Byron Hospital Property
Fort Wayne, Indiana (October 13, 2026) – The Allen County Board of Commissioners is selling 62 acres of land on the northwest corner of the intersection of State Road 3 (“Lima Road”) and Carroll Road. The property is part of what used to house the Byron Hospital/Health Center and the Sheriff Department’s Kidder Building. Both structures have been demolished in recent years.
The property is being sold via an online bidding process that opened on October 1 and will close on November 30, 2026. The bidding process, special terms and conditions, active bid list, and property information such as surveys and environmental assessments are on the Allen County Website under the Board of Commissioners’ Department page.
The sale of this desirable property is supported by Huntertown Town Council. In a letter of support, the Council recognized the land as the “southernmost gateway into Huntertown,” representing “a unique opportunity for strategic economic development that can further enhance Huntertown’s reputation as ‘A Great Place to Call Home’. The Town views the Byron Property as an important component of the long-term vision for a strategic commercial corridor along State Road 3. Thoughtful commercial development at this location has the potential to strengthen the local economy, expand employment opportunities, increase the Town’s tax base, and provide additional dining, retail, service, and recreational amenities for residents and visitors alike.”
Huntertown Town Manager Hannah Walker shared, “The Huntertown community is excited for the commercial development opportunities the sale of the old Irene Byron property brings to the area. As Huntertown continues to experience significant growth – averaging approximately 8% annually – the property presents an exceptional opportunity for a company or organization to grow alongside the community while providing much-needed services, amenities, and employment opportunities for residents. Positioned at Huntertown’s “front door”, the site offers a highly visible and strategically important opportunity to create an inviting entrance to the Town and help shape the next phase of commercial development along the State Road 3 corridor.”
Greater Fort Wayne Inc. President and CEO John Urbahns echoed these sentiments, noting, “The sale of the old Irene Byron property on State Road 3 (Lima Road) is a unique opportunity for Allen County and the Town of Huntertown. It is a rare opportunity for government to be able to return a property this size back to the private sector for development, especially in a fast-growing area of the community. The property is well positioned to support the continued growth and provide a location for market driven amenities in Huntertown and northern Allen County.”
Minimum accepted bid is set at $8 million dollars; all subsequent bids must advance the high bid by $50,000 or more. Any questions regarding the sale, or terms and conditions, may be directed to the Commissioners’ office at the Citizens Square Building, 200 East Berry Street, Suite 410, Fort Wayne, Indiana, (260) 449-7555 during regular County business hours.
