Fort Wayne, Indiana (August 18, 2026) – The City of Fort Wayne’s Southeast Strategy implementation is continuing with an approval of the Oxford streetscape at Fort Wayne City Council this evening. The $3.46 million dollar project is led by the Community Development Division and includes redesigning the road and sidewalks along a nine-block section of Oxford Street between Lafayette and Oliver streets. The project, which will be constructed in two phases, includes significant work that will improve pedestrian and vehicle safety, as well as make the corridor more attractive.

Specific work includes:

  • Traffic solutions that will help slow traffic, such as widened sidewalks, bump outs, and additions of park strips.
  • New pedestrian signals and intersections.
  • Reconstruction of curbs and sidewalks to meet current ADA standards.
  • Reconstruction of all deteriorated drive approaches.
  • Stormwater solutions such as bioswales with native plants, that will help reduce street flooding.
  • 56 new ornamental streetlights to improve pedestrian safety.
  • Road reconstruction and new asphalt pavement.

More than 300 surveys from residents who travel Oxford Street regularly, as well as several open houses attended by dozens of residents, helped guide the plans for reconstruction. Construction is expected to start this fall with final completion scheduled for the end of July 2027. Click here for more information about the project.

The Southeast Strategy Update was adopted in 2021 and is a ten-year plan for focusing growth and investment in the quadrant. It was developed with extensive community input and has helped guide approximately $84 million in public and private investment in the last five years.
