Fort Wayne Loses Sixth of Last Seven in Walk-Off Fashion

Davenport, Iowa (August 11, 2026) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps lost Tuesday night, giving up three runs in the bottom of the ninth to the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals affiliate) in a 5-4 walk-off loss.

TinCaps (46-61, 19-22) starter Luis Gutierrez (No. 14 Padres prospect) tossed three scoreless innings while allowing one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.

Offensively, all four ‘Caps runs came courtesy of Alex McCoy (No. 16 Padres prospect). Following his Midwest League-leading 27th double of the season in the first inning, Luke Cantwell hit an RBI single into right field to get on the board. Cantwell now has a hit in 11 of his last 13 games and is hitting .333 (14-for-42) across the stretch.

McCoy then drove in Ryan Wideman (No. 4 Padres prospect) with an RBI single into center field in the second inning before scoring himself on a sac fly later in the inning.

Quad Cities (54-51, 23-18) made it a one-run game behind a two-run double by Zion Rose (Royals No. 5 prospect) in the fifth inning.

In the seventh, McCoy drove in Fort Wayne’s fourth and final run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Despite the late run, the ‘Caps were held hitless after McCoy’s third-inning single. The River Bandits held Fort Wayne hitless over the final 27 batters of the game.

Up 4-2 after eight innings, the TinCaps entered the ninth 34-1 when leading after eight frames, their only loss being an extra-innings loss on May 10 at home against Beloit.

Ben North led off the bottom of the ninth with his first High-A home run. Following a walk to Erick Torres, a bunt by Asbel Gonzalez forced an overthrow to first base by pitcher Will Varmette, scoring Torres to tie the game and putting Gonzalez at third. Five pitches later, a wild pitch brought home Gonzalez to walk it off.

With the loss, the TinCaps are now 5.0 games back with 25 games to go in the Second Half Eastern Division Standings.
