Fort Wayne Fire Department welcomes 13 new firefighters

Thirteen firefighters were welcomed to the Fort Wayne Fire Department in a graduation ceremony tonight at the Public Safety Academy.

Fort Wayne Fire Department Welcomes 13 New Firefighters

Fort Wayne, Indiana (February 26m, 2026) – Thirteen firefighters were welcomed to the Fort Wayne Fire Department in a graduation ceremony tonight at the Public Safety Academy.

Thirty percent of the FWFD’s 98th recruit class are in a group that is currently underrepresented within the FWFD, including one male who identifies as Black, one male who identifies as Hispanic, one male who identifies as Asian, and one female.

Some graduates will begin their duty as Fort Wayne firefighters at engine houses throughout the city tomorrow.

“Our newest firefighters have answered a special call to public service,” said Mayor Sharon Tucker. “We’re growing the fire department as our commitment to public safety continues to be a top priority. All of us can rest knowing that our excellent firefighters are dedicated to protecting property and saving lives.”

The recruits participated in 13 weeks of training and will now continue their training alongside firefighters from the 18 stations that serve the City of Fort Wayne.
