FWFD: Gas Leak Hazmat Response, 2700 block Lafayette Street

On November 26, 2025, at 1058 hours, the Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched to a gas leak in the 2700 block of Lafayette Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Under Control: 1347 hours

The City of Fort Wayne Water Department had been digging between the sidewalk and the road with a mini-excavator and struck a six-inch gas line. Firefighters had to shut down Lafayette Street between Pontiac and Leith Streets. Buildings in the immediate area were metered for any possible buildup of gas. NIPSCO arrived on scene and stopped the leak at 1347 hours. A portion of Lafayette Street remained closed while NIPSCO continued repairs to the gas line.

At 1610 hours, the Fort Wayne Police Department reported via email that Lafayette Street had reopened.

There were no injuries.
