Union Street Market announces opening date
Fort Wayne, Indiana (November 11, 2022) – Union Street Market will open to the public on Tuesday, Nov. 22, fulfilling a decade-long vision of a year-round, indoor public market in downtown Fort Wayne.
“Back in 2011, community leaders and visionaries began exploring the idea of having a public market in Fort Wayne, where local, independent businesses would sell foods grown and produced in Northeast Indiana on a daily basis,” said Ted Spitzer, Union Street Market’s director of planning and development. “The opening of Union Street Market fulfills that vision.”
Union Street Market brings a fresh new idea to Northeast Indiana – a place to eat and drink while also shopping for fresh foods.
“We hope people come to the Market hungry, because they will be able to enjoy great food and drinks onsite, and they will also be able to shop for fresh ingredients to cook delicious meals at home,” said Katy Silliman, senior experience director for Electric Works.
On Nov. 22, 13 merchants will begin serving at Union Street Market, and five more are expected to open in the following weeks. One merchant, Local Apple Cart, will debut its first permanent location after successfully operating a food truck.
“At Union Street Market, I will be making fresh soft-serve and hard ice cream on a daily basis,” said owner Rachel Nally. “Customers will always know where to find me, and my shop will offer pints to take home as well as sundaes, shakes, and lots of great flavors every day.”
In addition to the core merchants, an artisan fair within Union Street Market will kick off on Saturday, Nov. 26. The Artisan Market: Holiday Edition will operate from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through December 18 and admission is free. Nearly 30 local artists and craft vendors were selected to offer unique holiday gifts. This holiday market will provide a preview of the types of creative programming planned for Union Street Market and Electric Works in the months ahead.
Spitzer added, “All of the Market’s merchants are regional food entrepreneurs who produce a wide range of foods, including fresh and cured meats, seafood, cheese, baked goods, ciders, kombucha, barbecue, local honey, and Mexican specialties, to name a few. The list is long, and we believe there will truly be something for everyone.”Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 22, Union Street Market will operate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. The Market will be closed Thanksgiving Day. As of Nov. 22, 2-hour free parking for visitors will be available at the new Union Street Garage, which is accessible from Broadway.
