Midland, Michigan (August 25, 2022) – The TinCaps split a doubleheader against the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate) on a wet and late Thursday night at Dow Diamond.
After falling in the first game, 9-4, the ‘Caps bounced back with a 3-0 shutout victory in the finale. The doubleheader was scheduled after a rainout Wednesday. Rain returned Thursday. The forecast delayed the action by 28 minutes. The second game didn’t start until 9:36 p.m. and ended at 11:44. Rain fell steadily from about 7:00 on.
Despite the conditions, Ryan Bergert threw a career-high 99 pitches over five scoreless innings. Ethan Routzahn recorded the next four outs on the ground, while left-hander Ramon Pérez struck out the last two batters. This was Fort Wayne’s eighth shutout victory of the year.
At the plate, the TinCaps (19-31, 46-70) scored their runs early. First baseman Cole Cummings ripped a two-out RBI double in the first inning to score Lucas Dunn, who had been hit by a pitch. Then in the second, catcher Anthony Vilar lined a single to right field that scored center fielder Justin Farmer and left fielder Albert Fabian as Loons (31-20, 71-46) right fielder Damon Keith misplayed it.
In Game 1, Fabian, DH-ing, hit an RBI single to account for Fort Wayne’s only RBI hit.
