TinCaps Homer Twice in Road Win
Midland, Michigan (August 23, 2023) – Thanks to a pair of two-run homers, the TinCaps beat the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate), 6-3, on Wednesday night at Dow Diamond. Fort Wayne is 1 ½ games back of the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate) for a Midwest League East Division postseason spot with 16 games remaining in the regular season.
The ‘Caps (28-22 second half, 60-56 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as third baseman Kervin Pichardo drove home shortstop Jarryd Dale from third base with a groundout.
Designated hitter Carlos Luis extended the advantage to 3-0 in the fourth with his sixth homer of the season that brought in right fielder Lucas Dunn, who had walked.
The Loons (23-27, 68-47) got on the board with a run in their half of the fourth and pulled to within a run as they scored again in the fifth.
However, the TinCaps added on with first baseman Griffin Doersching’s light-tower shot to left that made it 5-1 as Dunn scored once more, this time after being hit by a pitch. The 6-foot-4 Doersching won the 2019 NCAA Home Run Derby while he was at Northern Ketucky University.
Second baseman Nerwilian Cedeño provided an RBI single in the seventh that made it 6-2.
Great Lakes got an unearned run in the eighth, but wouldn’t draw any closer.
Keegan Collett worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief with six strikeouts. David Morgan, with a 99-mph fastball, set things up in the eighth for Cole Paplham to close with a perfect ninth.
For the year, Fort Wayne leads the 12-team MWL in homers with 119 through 116 games. The ‘Caps also pace the circuit in SLG (.401) and OPS (.742).
