Game recap from the Fort Wayne TinCaps:

TinCaps Walk Off in Wild, 12-11 Win

Fort Wayne, Indiana (April 15, 2023) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps walked off the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians affiliate), 12-11, in a wild game on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Parkview Field. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, center fielder Jakob Marsee plated left fielder Justin Farmer from second base with a single to right field to win it. Farmer had just tied the game with an RBI double to bring home third baseman Carlos Luis.

There were many twists and turns to get there. More like a football or basketball contest, this game featured several ties and lead changes.

Initially, the Captains led, 3-0, with a three-run third. The TinCaps got on the board in the fourth thanks to a Luis run-scoring single.

After Lake County got that run back in the top of the fifth to lead, 4-1, Fort Wayne erupted in the bottom of the fifth. Designated hitter Marcos Castoñon trimmed the deficit with a run-producing double. Later in the frame, with two outs, Luis launched a grand slam over the wall in right field that gave the home team a 6-4 lead. Following those fireworks, catcher Colton Bender singled — one of a career-high four hits for him on the day. Next, Farmer crushed a homer of his own over the left-center field fence to make it 8-4.

The Captains, however, equalized with two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth.

First baseman Nathan Martorella gave the the TinCaps the lead again in the ensuing frame with a mammoth shot over the center field wall. The two-run homer also scored shortstop Jackson Merrill, who had doubled.

Once again, though, the visitors stormed back. Lake County scored thrice in the ninth, including a go-ahead, two-out, two-run single from shortstop Milan Tolentino. That put the Captains in front, 11-10.

The Captains lost despite recording 14 hits and not committing an error. Meanwhile, the TinCaps tallied 17 hits. Eight TinCaps had a hit, including six players with at least two hits. All nine batters in the lineup reached base safely, and eight scored. Luis sparked the ninth-inning rally with a one-out walk.

Fort Wayne can split its opening homestand with a win in the series finale on Sunday.
