Chodak to succeed Murray as Indiana Michigan Power President
Helen J. Murray, president and chief operating officer for Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), announced today that she will retire from the company this summer. The Fort Wayne native has been responsible for distribution operations and a wide range of customer and regulatory relationships for I&M since November 1, 2006. She began her career with the company in 1977. The electric utility serves approximately 580,000 electric customers in Michigan and Indiana.
Murray currently serves on the Board of the Indiana Energy Association, the Executive Committee of the Board of Northeast Indiana Corporate Council, and on the Board of the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce. She is board chair for the Public Safety Foundation of Northeast Indiana and is Board Trustee for the University of St. Francis, serving on the Compensation Committee and as chair of the Academic Affairs Committee. Murray is also a member of the Indiana Chamber Board of Directors. She plans to continue her role on the St. Francis Board but will not continue on the other Boards.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed leading I&M for the past three-and-a-half years and am proud of I&M’s employees and the successes they have achieved. It has also been my privilege to serve Fort Wayne through my involvement with local boards as well as the state of Indiana with my participation in state organizations,” Murray said. “It’s an exciting time for the electric utility industry and energy in general. I am confident that I&M’s employees will continue to meet the challenges and provide safe, reliable electricity to our customers.”
Paul Chodak III, currently president and chief operating officer of AEP’s Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO), will lead the company upon Murray’s retirement. Chodak has been president and chief operating officer of SWEPCO since 2008. He began his career with AEP in 2001 as a senior project manager. From 2002 to 2007, he held leadership positions in Regional Engineering for Regulated Generation, Corporate Technology Development, Environmental Programs, and New Generation. Prior to joining AEP, he was a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Chodak received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute prior to accepting a commission in the U.S. Navy, where he earned chief engineer and submarine officer qualifications. While in the Navy, he earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He earned a doctorate degree in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
