Unwelcomed Exhibit Discussion: A Fair Housing History of Sales & Lending Discrimination
Fort Wayne, Indiana (October 10, 2024) – Today the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI), in partnership with the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Human Relations Commission and the Fort Wayne Urban League, is hosting an in-person discussion on the Unwelcomed Exhibit: A Fair Housing History of Sales & Lending Discrimination at the Fort Wayne Urban League, 2135 Hanna Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46803, at 2:00 p.m. The free exhibit educates participants on the systemic barriers that have impacted today’s neighborhoods through redlining, racial covenants, steering, neighborhood intimidation, and other forms of housing discrimination.
Amy Nelson, Executive Director of the FHCCI, will speak about historical and contemporary housing discrimination in the U.S. including inequities featuring Fort Wayne. This talk will also spotlight information featured in the two-sided 12 panel exhibit as well as updated demographics and modern-day disparities. New to this exhibit for Fort Wayne residents are six additional panels focused on Fort Wayne with specific historical context and modern-day data to complement the original exhibit.
“Through the Fair Housing Center’s work, it has become evident that many Hoosiers are unaware of the government policies and private actions that have led to generations of lost wealth, particularly to residents of color, through barriers to homeownership,” stated Amy Nelson, Executive Director of the FHCCI. “It is our hope, through the Unwelcomed exhibit, to give viewers an opportunity to learn how or why they may live in segregated neighborhoods and what they can do to combat these discriminatory practices.”
Registration is free, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early. For more information, visit: www.fortwaynemetro.org/unwelcomed.
