Press release from Canstruction Indiana:

Local students will soon put down their cell phones and pick up cans. A lot of cans.

The fourth annual Canstruction® Indiana, sponsored by 3Rivers FCU in support of Community Harvest Food Bank, combines creativity and cooperation in order to combat hunger in our community. Teams from 14 local high schools, with mentors from IPFW’s construction and design program, will create giant structures made entirely of cans and non-perishable food items.

The event will be featured at Glenbrook Square Mall and will run from April 16th through the 25th. Once constructed, the can creations will be judged in a variety of categories. The public is encouraged to come out and vote for their favorites. One can is worth one vote. Event sponsors expect to collect over 150,000 cans, weighing in at nearly 75 tons. Rather than sending the food all over the country, the deconstructed creations are donated to the Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana. This community event is, truly, locals helping locals.

This year’s theme will be “Double the Cans – Double the Care.” Incorporating the ideas of “double” and “care”, visitors can expect to see a giant Double Bubble gum machine, Noah’s ark, and a tribute to the Twin Towers. In addition to raising hunger awareness, Canstruction provides local teens with a creative outlet and the opportunity to serve their community.
