Press release from the City of Fort Wayne:
Youth Engagement Council application deadline extended to April 16
Still have time for high school students to apply for service-learning opportunity
Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry has extended the application deadline for the Mayor’s Youth Engagement Council to April 16. Applications must be faxed or postmarked by that date.
The application – which requires student information, short answers to informational questions, two adult references and parent or guardian permission – is available at www.cityoffortwayne.org/myec.
Using a service-learning model, council members will identify ways they can address some of the community’s most urgent issues through connections with stakeholders in nonprofit organizations, the business community and youth agencies.
Applicants must be city residents and currently high school freshmen, sophomores or juniors in public, private or home schools. Mayor Henry wants the council, which will have up to 25 members, to reflect the diversity of Fort Wayne. Students selected for in-person interviews will be contacted by May 5 with final selections to be made this summer.
The council members will be asked to make a 12-month commitment. Meetings, which will be 60 to 90 minutes long, start in August at 5:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.
Why the extension of the application time? No interest on the part of Fort Wayne youth? Or, maybe, it’s a concern about becoming involved with a program that includes a note, ” No inquiries will be entertained during the application and selection process” on it’s application form? You know, a favored statement by the mayor’s political party like, “You can find out what’s in the program after you commit yourself to it” – ah la Nancy Pelosi and the health care bill.

Maybe the extension is to find more strong minded young individuals that are willing to move the city in the direction of diversity, inclusion, and empowerment, instead of old, tired, horse & buggy attitudes that some one like you seem is the right path to enlightenment and personal satifaction. Growth, as the City has accomplished over the last 7 years is a testament to the dedication to the leaders of Fort Wayne that the community has elected to move this once wonderful city back to it’s proud heritage of progression and forward thinking. The second largest city in Indiana needs to start acting like it and take the reins to move this city in the right direction and I believe it is starting to do so. Allen County does not run the City of Fort Wayne!
Just an observation – nothing more, nothing less. I found it odd that this Youth Engagement Council will meet at the same time as the City Council. It would seem that if you really wanted to engage the Youth in our local government, why not get them to at least observe and interact with some of the Common Council members?

Oh my goodness! It was extended because that was the week of spring break!Pretty simple.
Don’t read any more in to it!
Makes perfectly logical sense to me, Judi! Thanks for the insight!
