West Central Fire District Board Votes to Join Unified Allen County Fire & EMS District

Fort Wayne, Indiana (March 26, 2026) — The West Central Fire District Board of Trustees voted Thursday night to enter into an interlocal agreement to join the unified Allen County Fire & EMS District. This landmark decision marks a significant step toward the consolidation of resources and services for residents in Aboite and Lake Townships.

Following the lead of Wednesday’s vote by the New Haven Common Council and Northwest Fire District, West Central’s move to join the unified district is part of a strategic, county-wide effort to address declining volunteerism and ensure consistent emergency response standards across the entirety of Allen County.

“By joining the unified district, we are ensuring that our residents continue to receive the highest level of protection and professional service,” said Board President Mike Meyers. “This agreement allows us to pool our strengths with our neighboring districts, providing greater operational depth and fiscal stability for the future of not only West Central’s residents but everybody in Allen County.”

The unification process follows a ‘local-first’ approach, ensuring each district maintains strong representation. West Central is pleased to join this partnership with a stable, fully staffed roster of dedicated professionals, which allows us to immediately contribute to the county’s goal of enhanced response times. This transition will help us maintain that high standard of service while streamlining administrative costs for our taxpayers.

Operations for the newly unified county entity are scheduled to officially begin on January 1, 2027.
