News release from the City of Fort Wayne:

Neighborhood Code Compliance to lead additional enforcement hours in effort to prevent vehicles on grass surfaces
Pilot program to begin soon

Fort Wayne, Indiana (June 17, 2025) – The City of Fort Wayne’s Department of Neighborhood Code Compliance (NCC) will be leading additional enforcement hours in an effort to prevent residents from parking vehicles on the grass in residential districts which violates City Ordinance.

In addition to patrolling areas during regular business hours, NCC staff will begin working after regular business hours to tag and ticket vehicles in violation. Violations are subject to a $100 fine per day. The effort is part of a pilot program that will begin soon to see if a reduction in violations occurs. A report will be provided to City Council to show the result of the effort.

Parking in yards and on grass can cause damage to infrastructure like curbs, sidewalks, underground water, data, gas, and sewer lines, as well as cause damage to tree root systems that could eventually kill trees as well as cause damage to vehicles. The damage will result in a cost to homeowners and vehicle owners for the repairs.

In wet seasons, parking vehicles in the grass or yards causes ruts in the ground that can collect water, promoting optimal mosquito breeding grounds and affecting the neighborhoods. During dry seasons, parking vehicles with hot engines on grass or in yards increases the risk of vehicle and grass fires.

The City urges residents to maintain safe parking practices and respect their neighborhoods by only parking on approved surfaces.
