News release from the Ruth Koomler Art Gallery:
“Things Are Heatin’ Up!”
Fort Wayne, Indiana (May 19, 2025) – Ruth Koomler, owner of the Ruth Koomler Art Gallery, is one of just a handful of artists in Fort Wayne working in the medium of encaustic…a form of painting that involves a heated beeswax medium to which colored pigments are added. A technique that originated in Greece as a way to preserve and decorate their ships is now a much-admired and collected art form, but few understand the process or skill required.
So…what is encaustic art? Why is it so luminous? Is it difficult to create? Does it require special care? Can anyone do it? Ruth will answer these questions and more in a special LIVE demonstration on June 6th…First Friday at the Ruth Koomler Art Gallery. A select collection of her encaustic works will be on exhibition in the gallery and beginning at 2pm, Ruth will be showing us just how she created them!

Heating, layering, reheating. Things are really heating up in the gallery! So join us…see some incredible artwork, learn how it’s done, and maybe sign up for an encaustic workshop!
Also in the gallery in June: new pieces from Michael Poorman, local abstract artist working in oils, pastels, charcoal and mixed media. In addition, and new to the Ruth Koomler Art Gallery, we introduce Terri Lindvall, local abstract painter.
Don’t miss First Friday June 6th! It’s definitely art in action!
