Parkview Health negotiating with Anthem to secure continued affordable, high-quality care for Indiana patients

Fort Wayne, Indiana (April 29, 2025) – Parkview Health is actively working to reach a fair and timely agreement with Anthem before the expiration of the two parties’ current contract on July 31, 2025. As negotiations progress, Parkview remains committed to providing affordable, high-quality healthcare and ensuring access to services throughout Fort Wayne and beyond. The current contract is not applicable to Parkview facilities or providers in Ohio.

“Looking ahead to 2028, our proposal to Anthem continues the cuts to our hospital rates that we made in 2020 and would allow Anthem patients to pay less for their care in 2028 than they did in 2019,” said Dr. Jason Row, chief value transformation officer at Parkview Health. “This is something we’re proud to offer – 10 years of sustained rate reductions, especially when the cost of delivering care is on the rise. It’s a commitment to affordability that very few organizations have made.”

Parkview’s focus is on maintaining a fair and sustainable contract that reflects the work they’ve done to reduce the cost of care for patients. The goal is to ensure that patients continue to have access to top-tier care, and they believe this can be achieved without putting an unfair financial burden on those who rely on our services.

“For the past five years, Parkview has worked to reduce healthcare costs for our patients, giving back more than $1.1 billion in rate reductions to commercial payors, yet employers did not see those savings,” Dr. Row added. “We’ve taken meaningful steps to lower expenses while ensuring the high-quality care on which our community relies. Unfortunately, Anthem has not been as proactive in this effort, and it’s important that we continue to push for an agreement that benefits the people we serve – not just a one-sided arrangement that reduces access for seniors with Medicare Advantage plans and adds even more profits for Anthem’s shareholders.”

While Parkview has been actively working to reduce costs, concerns remain that Anthem is seeking an agreement that doesn’t reflect the access and quality that patients need. Key among Parkview’s requests of Anthem are:

  • Access to care for seniors with Medicare Advantage plans and fair reimbursement. Anthem simply does not cover the same services or provide the same payment as when Medicare seniors are covered directly by Medicare. These obstacles harm patients and lead to unfunded care that employers in our community must subsidize. Anthem and other commercial insurers have made billions off the backs of seniors, healthcare providers and the federal government, and must come to the table and agree to cover for the care seniors need.
  • Fair rates for services provided in non-hospital settings that are reimbursed typically at 60% of hospital-based care. Parkview is committed to expanding its network of low-cost ambulatory care sites but needs to be paid fairly when procedures are safely moved out of hospital settings.

What patients can do
At this time, Parkview and Anthem’s negotiations do not impact patient care. Patients should continue to visit Parkview hospitals, facilities and physicians as they normally would.

Parkview is notifying all Anthem patients of the negotiations via mail later this week. Parkview has also launched a dedicated website to keep patients informed, parkview.com/anthem, and a hotline where patients may direct additional questions, 260-215-6400.

Patients with Anthem may also consider the following steps to ensure that Parkview remains in Anthem’s network:

  • Call Anthem using the number on the back of your insurance card and tell them it’s important to keep Parkview in its network.
  • Those who have employer-sponsored insurance can talk to their HR or benefits manager about selecting a plan that includes Parkview in its network next year.
