Clearing storm drains protects your neighborhood

With more rain in the forecast, Fort Wayne City Utilities encourages residents to act now to prevent street flooding and water damage to homes.

After the Storm: Community Urged to Clear Drains Before More Rain Hits

Fort Wayne, Indiana (April 2, 2025) – The overnight powerful storms left a trail of debris—twigs, yard waste, and litter—clogging street gutters and storm drains. With more rain in the forecast, City Utilities encourages residents to act now to prevent street flooding and water damage to homes.

There are more than 22,000 storm drains across the city, and it takes a community-wide effort to keep them clear. Blocked drains can cause stormwater to overflow into streets, yards, and even homes. A few minutes of action—checking nearby drains and removing debris—can protect neighborhoods from flooding.

  • Check your street gutters and storm drains for leaves, sticks, and litter.
  • Safely remove debris and dispose of it in the trash to prevent it from washing back into the drains.
