Winter Contingency Plan ends today

Fort Wayne, Indiana (March 31, 2025) – Now that the coldest winter temperatures are past, the Winter Contingency Plan is winding down the operation of additional overnight shelter beds and warming centers. The additional beds and warming centers have been available December 1, 2024 through today at the Rescue Mission, the Salvation Army, Just Neighbors, St. Joseph Missions Women’s Shelter, InAsMuch Ministry, main branch of the Public Library, Project.ME and on Citilink buses.

The contingency plan created additional beds and day shelter space during the coldest months of the year. Although the additional space is now reduced, overnight and day shelter is still available at The Rescue Mission, St. Joseph Missions Women’s Shelter, and Just Neighbors regardless of temperature.

The City of Fort Wayne supported the Winter Contingency Plan with a Community Development Block Grant of $15,000 through the Office of Housing and Neighborhood Services.

“We’re grateful for the collaborative efforts of our partners,” said Kelly Lundberg, director of the Office of Housing and Neighborhood Services. “The support of all these organizations helped provide more than 1,000 additional bed nights to keep residents safe and warm during our coldest winter months.”
