News release from the City of New Haven Indiana:

New Haven Establishes Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas

New Haven, Indiana (September 16, 2024) — New Haven has joined a growing list of Hoosier cities that have established a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA).

A DORA allows individuals aged 21 and up to purchase alcoholic beverages from approved establishments and carry and consume them outdoors, within the boundaries of the designated area.

Approved at a city council meeting in late August, the city has created ordinances to establish two separate DORAs along Broadway Street, with each area ending outside of the right of way of Norfolk Southern’s railroad. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on, over, or beyond the train tracks.

The decision to establish DORAs within New Haven was made both to increase foot traffic to local businesses and to create a greater sense of engagement and entertainment throughout the community.

“We are so thrilled to be moving forward with these DORAs,” said New Haven Mayor Steve McMichael. “This move is part of our dedication to help New Haven further flourish into a community where people want to visit, live, work, and play.”
