Doersching Has Big Day in Series Finale
By Joseph HartzellFort Wayne, Indiana (July 21, 2024) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps fell, 6-3, to the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians affiliate) in front of a crowd of 5,003 fans on an overcast Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field.
Fort Wayne (9-15, 37-53) took an early lead to start the game, as third baseman Jay Beshears (No. 27 Padres prospect) walked to lead off the second inning, before first baseman Griffin Doersching laced a double off the left-center field wall.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of the home team until the top of the fifth inning when Lake County (13-10, 54-35) center fielder Guy Lipscomb launched a two-run homer to right field.
The TinCaps responded to tie in the bottom of the fifth though, as catcher Colton Bender doubled to drive in Doersching after his lead-off walk.
The Captains scored two in the sixth on an error and a sacrifice fly. Lake County added two more in the ninth from an RBI single by Lipscomb and a wild pitch.
Fort Wayne showed signs of life in the ninth and started to mount a rally. Left fielder Nick Vogt led off the inning with a walk, before a two-out Doersching run-scoring double. The first baseman impacted the game heavily, as he went 2-for2, with two walks, two doubles, and two RBIs.
Starting pitcher Henry Báez (No. 30 Padres prospect) turned in a solid 4 1/3 innings of work, giving up two runs on just three hits and one walk.
