TinCaps Return from Break with Sellout Crowd
Fort Wayne, Indiana (July 19, 2024) – Nearly 8,000 fans filled the seats at Parkview Field on Friday for Harry Potter Night, but there was no magic for the TinCaps as they lost to the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians affiliate), 3-2. It was the first night of Minor League Baseball since Sunday after four consecutive off days around MLB’s All-Star Game.
Fort Wayne (9-13, 37-51) put the tying run at third base and the winning run at first in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Captains closer Magnus Ellerts recorded his Midwest League-leading 11th save of the season.
The ‘Caps out-hit the Captains, 10-4, but nine of the hits were singles and they went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.
Third baseman Devin Ortiz had a game-high three hits, including a two-out RBI double in the fourth that scored designated hitter Ethan Salas (No. 1 Padres prospect), who had singled. Ortiz then came in on a run-scoring hit by left fielder Nick Vogt. That tied the game, 2-2, after Lake County (11-10, 52-35) had manufactured a run in the first and another in the second.
The Captains propelled ahead for good in the fifth as right fielder Jorge Burgos launched a home run to straightaway center field off the front of the 400 Club presented by US Foods.
The crowd of 7,906 marked the 11th sellout of the season in Fort Wayne.
The TinCaps wore Harry Potter-themed jerseys that are being auctioned off at TinCaps.com/auction with proceeds going to Soarin’ Hawk Raptor Rehabilitation Center.
