Midland, Michigan (July 11, 2024) – After a rainout on Wednesday, the TinCaps split a doubleheader against the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers affiliate) on Thursday night at Dow Diamond.
Fort Wayne (7-11, 35-49) prevailed in the nightcap, 3-2. The ‘Caps trailed 1-0 through five innings, but in the fifth, third baseman Devin Ortiz lined a game-tying RBI single. Then designated hitter Anthony Vilar knocked in a pair for the lead.
Great Lakes (7-10, 41-42) got a run back in the sixth, but Manuel Castro came on for the final five outs, striking out four. He earned his team-leading sixth save of the season.
Catcher Ethan Salas (No. 1 Padres prospect) and right fielder Kai Murphy both doubled in the game, too.
Earlier, the Loons won the opener, 4-1. They hit a pair of two-out, two-run homers. The only run for the TinCaps came in the seventh and final inning as shortstop Jay Beshears scored on a wild pitch. He singled earlier in the frame and walked in the game as well. Vilar, starting at catcher in that one, had two hits.
