On July 9, 2024, at 21:52 hours, an off-duty Fort Wayne Police Officer in a fully marked squad car at the intersection of East Gump Road and Coldwater Road was involved in an accident.

Fort Wayne Police Department incident report:

Date: July 09, 2024

Location: East Gump Road and Coldwater Road

Time: 21:52 hours

Details/Summary:

On Tuesday, 07/09/2024, at approximately 9:52 PM, an off-duty Fort Wayne Police Officer was driving a fully marked squad car at the intersection of East Gump Road and Coldwater Road. The officer was traveling eastbound on Gump Road and stopped at a red traffic signal at Coldwater Road. A GMC pickup truck was traveling northbound on Coldwater Road and a Dodge minivan was traveling southbound on Coldwater Road.

Preliminary reports indicate northbound and southbound traffic on Coldwater Road had a green light at the traffic signal. It appears the driver of the pickup truck failed to yield the right of way and attempted to turn left in front of the minivan traveling southbound on Coldwater Road. The collision caused the minivan to make minimal physical contact with the squad car that was stopped at the red traffic signal.

The juvenile driver and the juvenile passenger in the GMC pickup truck had a complaint of minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene. The minivan was occupied by two adults and three juveniles. All five occupants of the minivan were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. One of the juveniles was downgraded to life-threatening condition by a physician at the hospital. The officer did not report any injuries at the scene. Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.

This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
