Sellout Crowd Sees TinCaps Win
Fort Wayne, Indiana (June 30, 2024) – In front of a sellout crowd at Parkview Field on a 70-degree and sunny Sunday afternoon, the TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons (Reds affiliate), 5-1, in their homestand finale.
Fort Wayne (3-6, 31-44) starting pitcher Braden Nett (No. 16 Padres prospect) pitched four perfect innings with four strikeouts as he continues to ramp up after time on the injured list.
Meanwhile, the ‘Caps opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as first baseman Romeo Sanabria provided a sacrifice fly to score center fielder Homer Bush Jr., who had led off with a double.
The TinCaps increased their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the second inning. Left fielder Nick Vogt scored on a wild pitch, Bush brought in a run with a sac fly, and catcher Anthony Vilar knocked a two-out RBI single. Vilar finished with a game-best two hits. Fort Wayne later tacked on another insurance run in the fifth.
Dayton (5-4, 39-36) plated its lone run in the seventh inning.
After Nett, left-hander Jackson Smeltz, a Purdue alum who grew up in Lafayette, worked two scoreless innings with three punchouts to earn the first win of his Minor League Baseball career.
Bradgley Rodriguez (No. 28 Padres prospect) recorded the final six outs. Collectively, Fort Wayne’s pitchers yielded just three hits.
The TinCaps improved to 10-3 in Sunday games – series finales – this season.
