Ninth Inning Heroics Propel TinCaps Past South Bend Cubs
By Joseph HartzellFort Wayne, Indiana (May 15, 2024) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps came from behind to walk off the South Bend Cubs, 3-2, on Wednesday night at Parkview Field. Devin Ortiz delivered a game-winning double to score Jay Beshears in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The two starting pitchers were both strong early, starting the game with three scoreless innings. The scoring started in the fourth, but the game stayed tied as both teams picked up a run. For the TinCaps (13-22), right fielder Kai Murphy led off the inning with a single and catcher Anthony Vilar later brought him in with an RBI groundout.
South Bend (14-21) took a 2-1 lead in the fifth as catcher Casey Opitz launched a home run to left.
But in the seventh, with two outs and Vilar at third base, second baseman Nerwilian Cedeño singled to tie the game up, 2-2.
In the ninth inning, Beshears, who was making his High-A debut after being promoted by the Padres from Single-A Lake Elsinore yesterday, recorded his first hit in Fort Wayne – a two-out single. Then Ortiz, the first baseman, proceeded to line a hit into right-center field. Cubs right fielder Rafael Morel slipped as he was fielding the ball, and Beshears scored from first.
On the mound for the ’Caps, lefty Jagger Haynes (No. 18 Padres prospect) threw six quality innings, only giving up two runs on five hits while striking out three. Relievers Bradgley Rodriguez and Tyler Morgan combined for three scoreless innings in relief.
The TinCaps have now overcome a deficit in eight of their 13 victories. Fort Wayne has led the Midwest League in games decided by one run (13). This was the second walk-off victory of the year for the ‘Caps.
