Midland, Michigan (April 5, 2024) – The TinCaps dropped their season opener on the road Friday night against the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate), 3-2, in 11 innings.
Great Lakes (1-0) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 11th inning as shortstop Noah Miller (No. 27 Dodgers prospect) hit a game-winning single to by the first-base bag into right field to score Luis Rodriguez.
Fort Wayne (0-1) catcher Ethan Salas (No. 1 Padres prospect) reached base twice with a single and a walk. He also stole a base. ‘Caps second baseman Nerwilian Cedeño had the club’s lone extra-base hit with a second-inning double, and later scored the season’s first run.
But the Loons equalized in the third inning and the game remained tied through 10 innings.
TinCaps left fielder Lucas Dunn made the play of the night to force the game into the 11th inning. With one out in the bottom of the 10th and the winning run at third base, he started a 7-2 double play with a diving catch and an outfield assist as the runner attempted to tag and score.
Fort Wayne took a brief 2-1 lead in the 11th on an RBI groundout by first baseman Griffin Doersching, who also reached base twice with a pair of walks.
Meanwhile, Ethan Routzahn struck out a game-high five batters over two scoreless innings of middle relief.
