Game recap from the Fort Wayne TinCaps:
After Break, Fort Wayne Falls on Road in Tight Game
Midland, Michigan (July 14, 2023) – The Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate) walked off the TinCaps, 3-2, on Friday night at Dow Diamond. Fort Wayne led 2-1 going into the final frame before the home team rallied for a pair.
With two outs, Loons (10-6 second half, 55-26 overall) leadoff hitter, shortstop Taylor Young, hit a game-winning single to score left fielder Chris Newell. With Great Lakes trailing by a run, Newell had a two-out single to extend the contest that advanced Damon Keith, who led off with a single, from first base to third. Designated hitter Chris Alleyne plated Keith with a single of his own to tie the game. Then center fielder Jake Vogel walked to load the bases for Young.
After the Loons scored an unearned run in the second inning, the TinCaps (11-5, 43-39) tied the game in the third as center fielder Jakob Marsee (No. 22 Padres prospect) unloaded his eighth home run of the season down the right-field line. Marsee, who grew up in Allen Park, Mich., about two hours away, attended Central Michigan University, which is less than 30 miles away from the ballpark.
Marsee then gave Fort Wayne a 2-1 lead in the fifth, singling in right fielder Joshua Mears, who was on base after a double.
The 22-year-old Marsee finished with three hits, a walk, and his 29th stolen base of the season. For the year, he leads the Midwest League in runs (66), while ranking second in on-base percentage (.399), and third in stolen bags, among other categories.
First baseman Nathan Martorella (No. 23 Padres prospect) tallied two hits, including a double. His .531 OPS on the season ranks fifth in the circuit.
TinCaps starter Austin Krob worked five innings with five strikeouts, scattering four hits and a walk. Edwuin Bencomo tossed a scoreless sixth, while Adam Smith blanked the Loons for two innings.
Fort Wayne finished with 10 hits and drew four walks, but went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base.
The TinCaps remain three games ahead of the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds affiliate) for the East Division’s second-half postseason berth.
