Castañon Homers, But Captains Win
Eastlake, Ohio (July 1, 2023) – Marcos Castañon hit a three-run homer, but the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians affiliate) came from behind to beat the TinCaps, 5-3, on Saturday night at Classic Auto Group Park.
Fort Wayne (4-3, 36-37) took its 3-0 lead three batters into the game. Shortstop Jackson Merrill (No. 1 Padres prospect) and center fielder Jakob Marsee (No. 22 Padres prospect) drew back-to-back walks before the designated hitter belted his 10th home run of the season. The 24-year-old Castañon ranks seventh in the Midwest League in homers, fifth in RBIs (45), and 10th in average (.270). However, the TinCaps didn’t score again.
Merrill finished with two hits, including a double, plus his walk. Left fielder Albert Fabian also had two hits. Marsee drew a second walk and stole his 25th base of the season. He leads the league in runs (58), while ranking second in walks (56), and third in both stolen bases (25) and on-base percentage (.394). But Fort Wayne, which totaled seven hits and five walks, went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight on base.
Lake County (2-5, 33-39) scored once in the third inning, once in the fifth, and once again in the sixth to tie the game. Captains third baseman Dayan Frías (No. 30 Guardians prospect) hit a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning to put the home team in front.
TinCaps starter Ryan Bergert struck out eight over five innings of two-run ball. Bergert’s 70 strikeouts on the season are tied for the second most in the league.
